An ongoing international study into genetics and anorexia nervosa is finding that family relationships do not cause the body-wasting ailment. The research indicates that anorexia may have genetic ties and environmental triggers, but parents and other family members cannot cause the disorder any more than they can cause asthma or cancer. Data show a strong genetic component may be the primary cause patients develop the disorder, according to a statement from the researchers released in January. Anorexia and other eating disorders carry a stigma with them— one that causes many sufferers to hide their eating habits and refuse to seek help. Placing unwarranted blame on the families of the sufferers carries the stigma a step further and creates additional obstacles to recovery, according to the study’s authors. Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder and is the most lethal of all psychiatric illnesses, with a mortality rate greater than 10%. Walter H. Kaye, MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was quoted as saying that blame should not be assessed. “Families should not be blamed for causing anorexia,” he said. “In fact, they are often devastated and suffer from the consequences of this illness.” The team of researchers involved in the Genetics of Anorexia Nervosa collaboration is studying families that have had two or more relatives with anorexia nervosa to determine to what extent genes play a factor. Families in which two or more relatives have had anorexia nervosa (this includes siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, or grandparents) are encouraged to contact the researchers for more information about participation in the study. The research involves phone interviews, questionnaires, and a blood draw. Participants are compensated for their time.
